Membrillo (Quince)

Autumn is the season for quinces, a fruit linked since distant times to the Mediterranean and Near East . Originally from the river valleys of the Tigris and Euphrates in central Asia, its production extended all over Europe . Quinces are grown as fruit trees, but it is also a very decorative tree in the garden, thanks to its form and delicate flowers which blossom in the spring.

Belonging to the rose family, the tree produces an apple-like fruit, which is bigger and with a yellowish-green skin, slightly furry to the touch. It has a rather bitter taste and it is difficult to eat raw, so it is usually mixed with sugar to make deserts, jams and jellies.
