Olivo (Olive)

Originating in the Mediterranean region, olives are now also grown in other regions, such as California, Chile and Australia, where the climate is suitable. It is an evergreen tree, with wind-pollinated tiny white flowers. The olive fruit becomes black when fully ripe. The fruit is rich in oils and hence is cultivated for the production of olive oil, which forms a key part of the famous Mediterranean diet. The trees are maintained in shape by regular pollarding, which produces valuable timber, the wood being very hard.
