Mérida
Mérida: An hour away is Mérida, named by the Romans as Emerita Augusta. The city was founded in 25 BC to billet veterans of the Roman army, who were sent there by the Emperor Augustus to settle in the fertile lands of Lusitania, for which it became the capital. It was declared a World Heritage Site in 1993.
